College experts like Daryl Capuano, who runs the educational consultancy The Learning Consultants, have been hearing families’ growing concerns about economic insecurity as the cost of living and the unemployment rate among college grads have risen.

It makes sense, Capuano said, that more families want to consider the long-term payoff of a degree during the college decision process – especially when certain schools yield an ROI of hundreds of thousands more dollars than others.

“The economic insecurity of the parents and economic insecurity of the reality of most 20-somethings drives this interest,” he said.

“A reasonable number of parents want to have a sense that [students will] be able to get the job and be in a career that will make them independent before they invest the large amounts of money on college,” he said.
