Choosing a Career in the Age of AI: What Young People—and Their Parents—Need to Understand

For most of human history, parents could give their children fairly straightforward career advice. Find something you are good at. Earn the necessary degree or credential. Work hard. Build experience. Gradually move up.

That advice was never perfect. But it was reasonable.

Today, the path is less predictable. Artificial intelligence is developing rapidly. College costs are high. Many entry-level jobs are becoming more competitive. Young people hear conflicting messages every day. Some are told that they must become computer scientists. Others are told that artificial intelligence will soon replace computer scientists. Some are urged to follow their passion. Others are warned to choose only “safe” careers.

The result is often not clarity, but paralysis.

At Career Counseling Connecticut, we work with high school students, college students, recent graduates, and young adults who are trying to make thoughtful decisions in this changing environment. The first principle we emphasize is simple: No one can predict the future with precision. But uncertainty does not mean that young people should make casual choices. It means they need a better decision-making framework.

The young people who thrive in the world of AI will not necessarily be those who correctly guess the one perfect occupation at age 17 or 22. They will be those who understand themselves, develop valuable abilities, learn how to use new tools, and place themselves in fields where they can continue to grow.

AI Is More Likely to Change Most Careers Than Eliminate All of Them

Public discussion about artificial intelligence tends to move between two extremes. In one version, AI will create extraordinary prosperity and liberate people from routine work. In the other, it will eliminate enormous numbers of jobs and make traditional career planning nearly useless.

Both possibilities contain elements of truth. Neither is a sensible foundation for helping an individual young person choose a direction.

The more useful question is not, “Will AI replace this career?” The better question is, “Which parts of this career can AI perform, which parts still require human ability, and how might the combination change the value of the worker?”

Most jobs are not one activity. They are collections of tasks. A lawyer researches, analyzes, writes, advises, negotiates, exercises judgment, and earns a client’s trust. A physician gathers information, evaluates evidence, communicates with patients, makes decisions under uncertainty, and accepts responsibility for those decisions. A marketing professional studies customers, develops strategy, creates material, interprets results, and persuades other people. AI may perform or accelerate some of these tasks without replacing the entire professional.

This is also the broad conclusion of the International Labour Organization. Its 2025 analysis found that one in four jobs worldwide had some exposure to generative AI, but that transformation of work—not wholesale replacement—was the more likely result. Clerical work remains especially exposed, while some highly digitized professional and technical tasks are increasingly affected as well.

That distinction matters enormously. A career can remain valuable even if 30 or 40 percent of its current tasks change. Indeed, the people who learn to use AI effectively may become more valuable because they can accomplish more, analyze more information, and spend more time on higher-level work.

The danger is not always that AI will take the entire job. The more immediate danger is that a person who knows how to use AI thoughtfully may outcompete a person in the same field who does not.

The End of the “Learn Once, Work Forever” Model

The most significant career trend may not be the disappearance of particular job titles. It may be the accelerating change in the skills required within those jobs.

LinkedIn’s Work Change Report estimates that by 2030, 70 percent of the skills used in most jobs will change, with AI acting as a major catalyst. It also reports that people entering the workforce today are on pace to hold approximately twice as many jobs during their careers as workers did 15 years ago.

Any projection should be treated as directional rather than prophetic. Nevertheless, the trend is clear. Young people should not think of education as something they complete before entering “the real world.” The ability to learn, unlearn, and relearn will itself be a central career advantage.

This changes what parents and students should value.

A first job still matters, but it is not a permanent identity. A college major matters, but it is not a life sentence. A technical skill matters, but it may not remain valuable in its current form for 30 years. The best early choices create options. They build transferable abilities, expose the young person to meaningful work, provide evidence of competence, and make the next step easier.

I often describe career development as a process of purposeful experimentation. A student forms a hypothesis—“I may like healthcare,” “I think I could be good at finance,” or “I seem drawn to counseling”—and then tests it through courses, conversations, shadowing, internships, projects, and real work. That process is far more useful than choosing a major based on a vague impression or the suggestion of a well-meaning relative.

Technical Literacy Will Matter in Almost Every Field

Young people do not all need to become software engineers. They do need to become comfortable with technology.

In the coming years, the ability to work with AI will become similar to the ability to work with the internet, spreadsheets, or presentation software. Some people will build the underlying technology. Many more will use it inside healthcare, finance, law, education, engineering, sales, design, operations, government, and entrepreneurship.

This does not mean that “prompt engineering” by itself is a durable career plan. Particular tools will change. Interfaces will improve. Tasks that currently require elaborate instructions may eventually become simple and automatic.

The lasting skill is AI fluency: knowing what these systems can do, recognizing what they cannot reliably do, asking good questions, checking their work, protecting confidential information, and combining machine-generated output with human knowledge and judgment.

A biology major who can analyze data and use AI responsibly may have an advantage over one who cannot. A communications major who understands automation, analytics, and digital strategy may be more useful than one who views technology as someone else’s department. A future business owner who can use AI to research markets, test ideas, create systems, and improve customer service may be able to build an enterprise with fewer resources than a prior generation required.

The goal is not to worship technology. The goal is to use it.

Human Abilities May Become More Valuable, Not Less

When a machine can produce an adequate first draft, summarize basic information, or complete a routine analysis, distinctly human abilities become more important.

These include judgment, empathy, leadership, persuasion, ethical reasoning, curiosity, taste, courage, creativity, and the ability to build trust. They also include the capacity to define the right problem. AI can often help answer a question. It is less dependable at deciding which question matters most, understanding the emotional reality surrounding it, and accepting responsibility for the consequences.

Consider counseling, healthcare, management, teaching, sales, law, and consulting. Each field will use more AI. Yet the professional’s value often rests on something beyond information. Does the client trust this person? Can the professional detect what has not been said? Can the manager motivate a discouraged team? Can the teacher recognize why a student is not learning? Can the clinician explain frightening information with both honesty and compassion?

These are not “soft” skills in the sense of being secondary. They are difficult human abilities with real economic value.

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics now identifies adaptability, attention to detail, and interpersonal ability as the three highest-ranked skills across the economy as a whole. Among many fast-growing occupations, it also highlights leadership, critical thinking, writing, problem-solving, mathematics, and technological competence.

This is encouraging for young people who do not view themselves as highly technical. They should still gain technological fluency. But they should not assume that the future belongs only to coders. The future will also belong to people who can understand other people, make sound decisions, communicate clearly, and bring order to complex situations.

Careers Connected to AI Will Grow—but So Will Healthcare and Hands-On Work

There is genuine opportunity in careers that build, secure, interpret, and apply advanced technology.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects that between 2024 and 2034, employment will grow by 33.5 percent for data scientists, 28.5 percent for information security analysts, 21.8 percent for actuaries, 21.5 percent for operations research analysts, 19.7 percent for computer and information research scientists, and 15.8 percent for software developers. These projections are substantially above the 3.1 percent projected growth for total employment.

But a common mistake is to conclude that every student should therefore enter computer science. Career choice should never be reduced to selecting the occupation with the highest projected growth rate.

First, growth percentages can be misleading. A small occupation can grow quickly while creating fewer total positions than a much larger, slower-growing field. Second, career fit matters. A student who dislikes sustained technical problem-solving will not become successful simply because data science appears on a list of growing occupations. Third, even promising professions can become crowded at the entry level. Finally, the technology itself will continue to change, placing a premium on deeper mathematical, analytical, and conceptual ability rather than familiarity with one current tool.

Healthcare offers another major area of projected demand. The Bureau of Labor Statistics expects healthcare and social assistance to be the fastest-growing major sector from 2024 to 2034 and to add roughly two million jobs. Nurse practitioners, medical and health services managers, physician assistants, mental-health professionals, and various therapy and technical roles are among the areas expected to grow.

Healthcare is not “AI-proof.” Few fields will be. But it combines expanding social need with work that often requires physical presence, licensed judgment, human reassurance, and responsibility.

Skilled trades and hands-on technical careers also deserve greater attention. Electricians, advanced manufacturing technicians, HVAC specialists, medical-equipment technicians, and renewable-energy workers perform work in physical environments that are harder to automate completely. The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects particularly rapid percentage growth for wind turbine service technicians and solar photovoltaic installers. These paths can offer strong opportunities without requiring the traditional four-year college route, although they do require training, discipline, and genuine skill.

For some students, a technical credential followed by paid work and eventual business ownership may be a better path than accumulating substantial college debt for a general degree without a clear purpose.

Entry-Level White-Collar Work Is Under Pressure

One of the more concerning trends for young people is that AI can perform some of the tasks historically assigned to junior employees.

Entry-level workers have often learned by conducting basic research, preparing routine reports, drafting simple communications, organizing information, or creating first versions of work that a more experienced person would review. Those are precisely the kinds of activities generative AI can accelerate.

This does not mean that companies will stop hiring young people. Organizations still need future managers, professionals, rainmakers, creators, and leaders. But employers may hire fewer people merely to complete routine cognitive tasks. They may expect new employees to contribute at a higher level sooner.

That makes experience before graduation even more important.

The student who graduates with only a transcript may be at a disadvantage compared with the student who has completed internships, built a portfolio, participated in meaningful research, managed a real project, worked with clients, or demonstrated the intelligent use of AI. Employers increasingly want evidence, not merely aspiration.

This is one reason I encourage students to stop viewing summer as empty space. A summer job, internship, independent project, job shadow, volunteer role, or small entrepreneurial effort can teach a young person what work actually feels like. It can also produce stories and accomplishments that distinguish the student during interviews.

In the age of AI, young people must show not only what they know, but what they can do.

Some Career Areas Face Greater Disruption

Students should not panic about any single major or profession. They should, however, examine the nature of the work they are considering.

Roles built primarily around routine information processing are more vulnerable. The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects declines in several office and administrative occupations, including customer service representatives, legal secretaries, procurement clerks, credit authorizers, and claims-related roles. It also projects an overall 3.9 percent decline in office and administrative support employment between 2024 and 2034.

This does not mean that every person in these areas will lose a job. It means that young people should be cautious about preparing for work whose main value is transferring information from one format to another, following a predictable script, or producing routine material that software can create quickly.

Creative fields will also change. AI can already generate images, video, music, marketing copy, and design variations. Yet creativity is not disappearing. The economic question is shifting from “Can you produce something?” to “Can you produce something distinctive, strategically useful, emotionally resonant, and appropriate for this specific audience?”

Average output will become abundant. Original insight, trusted judgment, and excellent execution will remain scarce.

The College Major Still Matters—but Not in the Way Many Families Think

Families often ask, “What major will guarantee a job?” There is no such major.

Some majors connect directly to a profession and carry clear labor-market value: nursing, engineering, accounting, computer science, and certain allied-health fields are examples. Other majors provide broad intellectual training and require the student to build a more explicit bridge to employment.

A student majoring in history, psychology, English, political science, or communications is not necessarily making a poor choice. But “I will figure it out after graduation” is becoming a less acceptable strategy. The student should connect the major to skills, experience, relationships, and a plausible first destination.

For example, a psychology student might add statistics, research methods, business courses, and internships connected to human resources, behavioral health, market research, user experience, or organizational development. An English major might build expertise in digital communications, grant writing, content strategy, public relations, or technical writing—and learn how AI is changing each area. A political science major might develop competence in data analysis, public policy, government operations, compliance, or advocacy.

The issue is not liberal arts versus practical education. That is an oversimplified debate. The issue is whether the student is developing a valuable combination of abilities and can explain how that combination will help an organization solve problems.

The best college plan usually includes both breadth and direction: broad thinking, strong communication, quantitative competence, technological fluency, practical experience, and a developing area of expertise.

Young People Need a “Skill Stack,” Not One Magic Skill

In an earlier economy, possessing one scarce technical skill could sometimes support an entire career. Today, combinations may matter more.

A person who understands finance is useful. A person who understands finance, communicates well, analyzes data, and uses AI effectively may be unusually useful.

A person who understands biology is useful. A person who understands biology, statistics, regulatory systems, and scientific communication may have far more options.

A person who can write is useful. A person who can write, interview experts, understand an audience, evaluate AI-generated material, and develop strategy offers something more difficult to replace.

I call this building a skill stack. The goal is not to become world-class in ten areas. It is to develop a combination that is valuable, relatively uncommon, and aligned with the person’s natural abilities.

For most young people, I would emphasize six broad categories:

  1. Communication: Writing, speaking, listening, presenting, and persuading.
  2. Analytical ability: Interpreting evidence, working with numbers, identifying patterns, and making sound decisions.
  3. AI and technological fluency: Using modern tools productively while recognizing their limitations.
  4. Interpersonal ability: Collaborating, understanding people, managing conflict, and building trust.
  5. Execution: Organizing work, meeting deadlines, paying attention to detail, and finishing what one starts.
  6. Domain expertise: Knowing something substantive about healthcare, finance, education, engineering, policy, logistics, science, law, or another field.

AI literacy without domain knowledge can produce confident nonsense. Domain knowledge without technological fluency can lead to declining productivity. Human skill without execution may create likability without results. The strongest young professionals will integrate all three dimensions: knowledge, tools, and character.

Career Planning Must Begin With Self-Knowledge

Labor-market data is important. But career counseling cannot begin and end with lists of growing occupations.

Two students can examine the same profession and reasonably reach opposite conclusions. One may thrive as an engineer because he enjoys precision, systems, and difficult technical problems. Another may experience the same work as draining and isolating. One student may love the immediacy and human significance of nursing. Another may find the physical and emotional demands overwhelming.

A sound career decision considers several forms of fit:

Interest: What naturally holds the person’s attention?

Ability: What can the person do well—or realistically learn to do well?

Personality: What kinds of environments and interactions produce energy rather than chronic depletion?

Values: Does the person prioritize security, autonomy, status, creativity, service, income, flexibility, or some combination?

Lifestyle: What does the profession require in hours, location, education, travel, stress, and responsibility?

Opportunity: Is there sufficient demand, and what must the person do to become competitive?

No assessment can mechanically produce the correct career. Assessments can provide language, reveal patterns, and generate possibilities. The deeper work involves integrating the results with the young person’s actual life, experiences, motivation, and opportunities.

This is where individualized counseling matters. A generic list of “best careers for the future” cannot determine what a particular young person should do.

Parents Should Encourage Direction Without Demanding Certainty

Parents have a difficult role. They can see risks that their children do not see. They may also feel pressure because college and graduate school are so expensive. It is reasonable to want a plan.

But demanding premature certainty can make the problem worse.

A 17-year-old does not need to know exactly what he or she will do at age 40. The student should, however, begin developing direction. There is an enormous difference between healthy exploration and passive drifting.

Healthy exploration is active. The student investigates occupations, speaks with professionals, takes relevant courses, tries internships, and pays attention to what produces engagement and competence. Drifting is passive. The student selects a college or major because friends are doing it, because the name sounds impressive, or because no better idea has emerged.

Parents should ask questions that lead to reflection:

What kinds of problems do you enjoy solving?

Which school subjects or activities make you feel most capable?

Do you prefer working with people, ideas, data, systems, or physical things?

What kind of working day can you imagine enjoying?

What are you willing to practice long enough to become excellent?

What evidence do you have that you understand this field?

What experience could you pursue in the next six months to test your interest?

The goal is not to conduct an interrogation at the dinner table. The goal is to move the young person from vague preference toward informed action.

A Better Framework: Direction, Experimentation, and Adaptability

The world of AI requires a new balance.

Young people need enough direction to make purposeful choices. They need enough experimentation to discover what fits. And they need enough adaptability to revise the plan when technology, opportunity, or self-understanding changes.

This framework is more realistic than searching for a permanently safe career.

  1. Choose a promising direction.

Identify two or three career areas that fit the student’s interests, abilities, personality, and values and that also offer reasonable opportunity.

  1. Investigate the actual work.

Do not rely on job titles or television portrayals. Read job descriptions. Study career paths. Speak with people at different stages. Ask what they do all day, what has changed, what they like, what they dislike, and what they would advise a young person to learn now.

  1. Test through experience.

Take a course. Shadow someone. Complete a project. Volunteer. Find a part-time role. Pursue an internship. The experience need not be perfect. Its purpose is to produce information and capability.

  1. Build a valuable skill stack.

Combine human, analytical, technological, and domain-specific abilities. Do not wait for a school to design the perfect combination.

  1. Learn to use AI responsibly.

Use AI for research, brainstorming, practice, organization, and analysis. Check its output. Do not surrender thinking to it. The student should become more capable through the use of AI, not merely more dependent on it.

  1. Review and adjust.

Every six or twelve months, ask: What have I learned about myself? What is changing in the field? What abilities am I building? What is my next useful experiment?

This is career planning as an active process rather than a one-time declaration.

The Best Long-Term Protection Is Becoming Genuinely Useful

There is no way to remove uncertainty from the future of work. AI will improve. Some jobs will shrink. New occupations will emerge. Existing professions will reorganize. Credentials that once guaranteed an interview may lose some of their power.

But the essential principles of career success are not disappearing.

Organizations and communities will continue to need people who can solve important problems, learn quickly, communicate clearly, exercise judgment, work with others, and produce results. Technology changes how those abilities are expressed. It does not eliminate their value.

My best advice to young people is therefore neither “ignore AI” nor “build your entire identity around AI.” Learn it. Use it. Understand how it is changing the fields you are considering. Then build the human and professional abilities that allow you to do what a machine cannot do alone.

The objective is not to select a career that will never change. Such a career probably does not exist. The objective is to become the kind of person who can continue to create value as careers change.

That is a more demanding goal than finding a safe job title. It is also a more hopeful one.
