“When should meet again?” my clients almost always ask. When I was younger, I would say “I think we are good. Call me as needed but you know what to do.” My general preference for both keeping costs down and only having high impact meetings was the impetus for my response.
Clients – usually the older ones and thus wiser about human nature – would insist on meeting again. It occurred to them and then to me as the years passed that accountability to someone outside oneself is critical for real action.
While I still hope to solve my client’s career challenge in one meeting, I better understand that an outside force is critical for accountability.
