Right now, many of Career Counseling Connecticut’s clients are recent college graduates immersed in job searches.
That’s lonely and challenging and a roller coaster of emotions.
But… “an interview” is the UPSIDE!!! of the roller coaster.
“I GOT AN INTERVIEW!!!”
The disappointment, therefore, from not getting the job post-interview can be devastating.
Here’s what I have seen from running Career Counseling Connecticut.
The truth is that most people have blind spots interpersonally that would cause some challenges in interviews. But young graduates have blind spots that often cost them job offers. They don’t know what they are doing wrong. And that’s exactly what prevents job interviews.
Tessa’s Wake-Up Call
Tessa, a recent graduate from Fairfield, CT, came to Career Counseling Connecticut frustrated. She had a strong GPA, a marketing internship, and a polished résumé. But after four interviews with top firms and no callbacks, she knew something was off. “I thought I was saying the right things,” she told us. “But clearly, I wasn’t.”
We ran her through a mock interview.
Within ten minutes, it was clear: Tessa wasn’t connecting. Her answers were technically sound, but robotic. She avoided specifics, rushed through her achievements, and gave vague responses to behavioral questions. Worse, she didn’t realize any of it. In her mind, she was doing great.
This is the blind spot: the gap between how graduates think they’re coming across and how they actually are.
What We Did Differently
We didn’t just tell Tessa what to fix—we showed her. With real-time coaching, recorded sessions, and direct feedback, she saw how her tone, body language, and vague answers were hurting her chances. Then we rebuilt her interview strategy:
-
We helped her craft concise, specific stories using the STAR method.
-
We trained her to slow down and sound confident—not rushed.
-
We helped her identify her unique value and communicate it clearly.
By the time she walked into her next interview, Tessa didn’t just hope she’d do well. She knew she was ready.
She landed the job.
The Bottom Line
Smart, capable graduates are getting rejected not because they’re unqualified—but because no one ever taught them how to interview. That’s where we come in.
At Career Counseling Connecticut, we help young professionals see what they can’t see. We identify blind spots, build confidence, and turn strong candidates into standout hires.
