Over the years, I have been surprised – although less so now – at the number of college graduates who did not seek full time employment during their senior year of college. Parents are much nicer these days.  Back in the day, old school parents would have been asking “have you applied for jobs?” on repeat from sometime in the fall of senior year to graduation!  In defense of both parents of college students and college students, there is some thought that the college of which they paid hundreds of thousands of dollars should have provided guidance.  But… that’s rarely the case. Colleges are very good at (1) providing courses in specialized fields and (2) at the more higher end colleges, helping clients get jobs. Both tangentially relate to career exploration. But neither provide the comprehensive overview related to matching students with careers. Specifically, it might be that someone does well enough in a finance class but that doesn’t mean the person is best suited for a career in finance. While interviewing with different companies will be helpful to present concrete options to the college student, it would be far better if the student created the vision first and then sought out companies that matched. Career Counseling Connecticut can help and if your child is graduating college in 2022, arranging that help NOW would be a good idea.
