I live in Old Saybrook, Connecticut.  The town name embodies at least some part of the “OLD” classic New England town filled with families, some of whom have been here for generations and otherwise traditional types whose kids for the most part follow traditional routes.

Oddly enough, just going to East Lyme, Connecticut, filled with many Pfizer families who come from all over the country and all over the world,  opens up what those in major cities are seeing: the career world is shifting dramatically.

What does this mean?

In my relatively small circle of Old Saybrook, three twentysomethings have created solo businesses through mastering skills such as digital marketing and video creation.  I know them quite well and informally have counseled them.  I believe them when they tell me they are making more money than they did in their full-time jobs.  And, they are really happy.

What this does NOT mean…

The road to the new world of work related to self-created businesses emanates from skill development.

Part of Career Counseling Connecticut’s work has been creating practical plans for such skill development as well as real world business guidance.
