Yes, your recent college graduate needs help but perhaps not in the way you think…

In running Career Counseling Connecticut for the last 15 years, I have fielded calls from anxious parents of recent college graduates with increasing frequency.

“Kyle hasn’t been able to get a job… could you help create a new resume?”

Sure.

That’s easy.  Or at least easy enough.

The revised resume is rarely the issue.

“Kyle” isn’t really sure what he wants to do. He has been applying to jobs that are related to his major but he realizes that his major – even if practical such as “business” – is not distinct enough to get through algorithms on Indeed and/or to hiring managers and HR recruiters.

Kyle needs to determine a career direction – or maybe a couple of directions – and then create a job search strategy.

He likely needs training on job search tactics (cover letters/interviewing) and almost definitely could benefit from outside accountability.

Fortunately, after we get these issues in place, the work of getting work is far easier.

If your child recently graduated college, congratulations!

Now, let’s get him/her into the world of work.
