Did your child – adult child – just graduate from college? Pre-pandemic, I noticed a surprising trend: present day college seniors were not looking for jobs as vigorously as college seniors once did.

When working with recent college graduates through Career Counseling Connecticut, I would ask “what has been your experience in applying for jobs?” A surprising number have responded: “None” or “Not much.” When pressed further, most would say: “I was just trying to get through senior year.”

This was circa 2015-2019.

The pandemic created a different scenario for the 2020 grads. But still, many had searched before March which struck me as unusual. I’m still forming conclusions as to how 2021 college graduates are approaching the job search but all signs point to a similar: “I’ll start applying for jobs during the summer after I graduate.”

No judgment here. Just an observation. However, I do know that it gets more difficult to secure a job as time goes on post graduation. The first few months become a year or two more quickly than most new grads realize and now one of the first questions they will be asked is “what have you been doing since graduation.”

With hope your adult child has enjoyed graduation, senior week, and even a post graduation vacation with friends.

Now let’s get that first job.
